Established in April 2025, the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) at Beijing Normal University (BNU) serves as a university-wide platform dedicated to advancing fundamental disciplines, interdisciplinary research, and emerging fields. Through interdisciplinary collaboration and organized research, IAS aims to enhance BNU's research strength, innovation capability, and the quality of talent development, thereby contributing to its goal of becoming a world-class university with leading disciplines.
IAS functions as both a key platform for BNU to explore the integrated development of education, scientific research, and talent development, and a pivotal pilot for its institutional reform. Guided by the principles of high standards, innovation, internationalization, and efficiency, IAS promotes synergies across its Beijing and Zhuhai campuses within a unified, globally oriented framework. By implementing institutional reforms, IAS integrates the multidisciplinary resources of BNU, stimulates researcher innovation, and builds a leading teaching and research platform supported by major strategic projects, high-level talent, and interdisciplinary innovation.
IAS has so far established five interdisciplinary research centers in frontier areas, including Frontier Biotechnology, Aging and Health, Matter Transformation and State Control, Theoretical Chemistry and Intelligent Computing, and Fundamental Mathematics, alongside complementary centers in Zhuhai with strengths in multiomics, artificial intelligence, systems biology, and complex systems science.
By establishing interdisciplinary platforms, providing sustained funding support, and innovating talent development models, IAS aims to cultivate outstanding researchers and innovative teams, build a high-level talent pool, and accumulate practical experience to optimize the governance of BNU and deepen its institutional reforms.
